How I Learned to Stop Guessing and Actually Measure a Roof
The first roof I ever helped with was my uncle's garage when I was 19 and I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, standing there with a notepad while he yelled up at me to figure out how many bundles we needed from the ground while I squinted at the roof like the answer was written somewhere in the shingles. We came up 11 bundles short. Uncle Tony still brings it up at Thanksgiving and that was 14 years ago, lol. So I've put in the hours since then to actually understand how this stuff works and honestly it's not that complicated once you know the units and accept that every roof has that one weird angle that makes you question why you didn't just hire someone in the first place. Most of it is just multiplication with a waste factor thrown in and a little bit of common sense and maybe some luck with the weather. You know how it goes. Took me way too long to figure that out.
The Square Thing
Everything in Roofing revolves around the square and one square covers 100 square feet of roof surface and if you confuse roof surface with floor space you're in for a bad time because a steep pitch adds way more area than most people realize until they're standing at the supply yard staring at a receipt that makes no sense. Not floor space. Roof surface. Big difference on a steep pitch and I mean a really big difference. Yep. Measure the length and width of your house, multiply them, then multiply by a pitch factor because sloped roofs have way more surface area than flat ones and that factor is what separates the people who finish on Saturday from the people who make three trips to the store. A 6/12 pitch roof which is super common in the US has a factor of about 1.12 and a 1,500 sq ft house at 50 ft by 30 ft plays out like this: 1,500 times 1.12 equals 1,680 sq ft of actual roof and that's 16.8 squares. Honestly just round it to 17 and move on with your life. Not worth overthinking it, you get the idea.
Shingles and All That Stuff
Most asphalt Shingle bundles cover about 33.3 square feet and the standard math says three bundles per square for regular three-tab while the thicker architectural kind might need 4 bundles per square but nobody really knows for sure until they check the actual wrapper on the actual bundle in their actual hands and I have seen people get burned by assuming the wrong number more times than I can count, etc.
For 16.8 squares of three-tab you multiply 16.8 times 3 and that gives you 50.4 bundles and you round up to 51 then add waste because cuts at hips and Valleys eat Shingles fast and things like uneven cuts or a dropped bundle that cracks open on the driveway happen way more often than you would think. I don't care what anyone tells you, always add at least 10% because the alternative is running out on a Saturday afternoon when every supply yard within 20 miles has already closed their gates and gone home for the weekend. With 10% waste that's 56 bundles total and you can sleep at night and not stress about making an emergency run that will cost you more in gas and frustration than the extra bundles ever would.
Sleep fine.
Contractors sometimes try to get away with 5% waste on simple Gable roofs and I've seen some of them pull it off when everything goes perfectly which basically never happens on an actual job site with actual weather and actual humans making actual mistakes one after another like a chain reaction of minor disasters. But 10% is the safe play and the cost difference between 5% and 10% extra is defintely less than the cost of driving back to the store at 3pm on a Saturday when you could be done and drinking something cold. Been there. Done that. Still hate every second of it.
The Layer Nobody Thinks About
The protective layer between your deck and Shingles matters way more than most people give it credit for and I learned this the hard way on a job where we left the standard felt exposed for three days and it rained hard overnight and by morning the whole thing had bubbled up in places like a bad sunburn, which cost us an entire afternoon of peeling and replacing before we could even start laying Shingles down. Synthetic material costs more upfront but honestly the peace of mind is worth it if there's any chance of weather delays or weekend schedule conflicts or just life getting in the way of your Roofing project.
Not cheap.
Worth it though.
Standard 15 lb felt rolls cover about 4 squares each and 30 lb felt covers 2 squares because it's thicker while the newer Synthetic stuff varies wildly so read the label before you buy and don't just grab whatever happens to be on sale that week and hope for the best. For 16.8 squares with 15 lb felt you divide 16.8 by 4 and that gives you 4.2 rolls and you buy 5 and call it done, simple as that really and one less thing to worry about, I mean.
Flashing and Edges and Things Like That
Flashing seals the seams where roof meets wall or Chimney or Valley and it's measured in linear feet and if you skip it you'll regret it within the first heavy rain guaranteed because water finds every gap you left and makes sure you know about it at 2am when you're trying to sleep through a storm and suddenly there's a drip hitting your pillow in the dark. A roof with 50 feet of Valley needs roughly 100 linear feet of Valley Flashing to cover both sides while one Chimney might need about 6 feet and the edge trim runs the entire outside border of the whole thing which is easy to forget when you're adding up all the big ticket items.
Add it all up: 100 feet for the Valleys plus 6 feet for the Chimney gives 106 feet total and with 10% extra you're at about 117 linear feet which covers your actual needs plus the inevitable measuring error that somehow always happens no matter how careful you think you're being, I guess.

When Things Get Tricky
Flat roof math does not work for steep roofs and the pitch factor matters a lot more than people think it should and I've watched homeowners skip it completely and end up 30% short on materials with no way to hide the mistake once the delivery truck pulls away from the curb and disappears down the street. Ridge caps are another gotcha with about 1 bundle needed per 20 linear feet of Ridge and I'd say maybe half the people I know forgot them on their first order and had to make that awkward second trip to the yard with their pride slightly damaged and their wallet a little lighter than expected.
And anything above an 8/12 pitch or a roof with multiple skylights and Valleys cutting through it in weird directions and angles that make no sense from the ground? I'd call a pro for that and save myself the stress because steep Roofs are no joke and falls are the number one Roofing injury by a huge margin and no amount of saved labor cost is worth a hospital bill or worse, you know?
But a simple Gable or Shed roof is totally manageable for a decent do-it-yourself person with careful planning and a free weekend and maybe a freind who owes you a favor from that time you helped them move a couch up three flights of stairs.
The Bottom Line on Ordering
Measure each plane separately and write everything down twice and order with 10 to 15% extra and sleep fine knowing you will not be making a panic run to the supply yard on a Saturday afternoon when everyone else in town is doing the exact same thing and the line at the contractor desk stretches halfway to the door and the guy in front of you is arguing about a return that clearly is never going to happen. I keep one old receipt in my glovebox as a reminder and I look at it every time I think about cutting corners on measurements and somehow that ratty little piece of paper has saved me more money than any fancy calculator ever has.
Been there, got the overpriced emergency delivery charge to prove it.
Not doing that again.
