Roofing Material Calculator: How to Estimate Shingles, Underlayment & Costs

I ordered roofing materials for the first time in 2018 for a shed-to-office conversion in my backyard and I walked into the supply yard feeling pretty confident. Walked out realizing I had no clue what a "square" was and had probably bought enough shingles for a structure twice the size of what I was building. The guy at the counter was nice enough to stop me before I swiped my card and he looked at my order form for about three seconds before saying "You sure about those numbers, chief?" I was not sure. Very not sure. Not even a little bit. Tbh. Completely clueless.
That experience taught me something useful though and there are only four things you actually need to calculate: shingles, underlayment, flashing, and total cost. Everything else is just variations on the same math wearing a different hat and honestly once you get those four down the rest is just details. Noise.
Measuring Your Roof (The Part Everyone Gets Wrong)
Forget your floor plan completely because roofs are sloped and the surface area is always bigger than the house footprint. Steeper roof equals bigger difference equals more materials equals more money and every one of those equal signs matters when you're writing the check. You know what I mean? Big money.
For a basic gable roof measure the length and width of the house including eaves, multiply for the footprint, then multiply by a pitch factor from this table which I have bookmarked on my phone for a reason and use way more often than I'd like to admit:

Roofs with hips, valleys, dormers, or anything fancier than two flat planes need an extra 2 to 3% more area tacked on and complex geometry punishes guesswork hard. The satellite measurement tools or a pro's laser measure will pay for themselves the first time you avoid a massive overorder or underorder and I've seen both go wrong in spectacular fashion.
Shingles
Three bundles per square for standard asphalt shingles so for 13.44 squares that's 40.32 bundles before waste and you add 10 to 15% to cover cuts at hips and valleys plus starter strips and ridge caps. Looking at about 46 bundles after rounding up because nobody sells partial bundles so round generously and don't overthink it. Seriously.
Why does waste actually matter in real life? Every time a shingle gets cut at a hip or valley the off-cut piece is usually too small to use anywhere else and on a roof with lots of angles the waste climbs fast. I've measured jobs where the waste hit 18% and the homeowner assumed I was padding the order but nope, that's just geometry being uncooperative and expensive and there's nothing you can do about it except order more.
Metal roofing uses different math entirely because panels are sold by the square foot (usually 36 inches wide) and you need about 10% extra for overlap and trim. Standing seam metal runs $6 to $12 per sq ft installed with materials alone at $3 to $6 and if those numbers make you wince just wait until you see the labor quote for a metal install, lol.
Tile roofing (concrete or clay) is heavier math in every sense of the word and a typical concrete tile covers about 1.1 sq ft each so for 1,344 sq ft that's roughly 1,222 tiles plus 5% for breakage and cracked pieces during handling, transport, etc. Tile roofs need reinforced framing too so this is absolutely not a DIY project. Not even close. Anyone who tells you otherwise has probably never lifted a concrete tile in thier life.
Underlayment
Three common options here and all of them have tradeoffs basically. 15 lb felt is cheapest but tears if you look at it wrong while 30 lb felt is thicker and better for low slopes and synthetic is lightweight and UV resistant but costs 2 to 3 times what felt does. Pick your poison based on budget and timeline. Nobody gets to tell you there's one right answer here.
All three come in rolls covering roughly 400 sq ft nominally though effective coverage drops with the required 2-inch overlaps. For 1,344 sq ft you're looking at 1,344 divided by 400 equaling 3.36 rolls and you round to 4 because partial rolls are useless and you'll use the extra somewhere, I promise.
I use synthetic on anything steeper than 6/12 since it's less slippery underfoot and honestly the price gap between felt and synthetic has narrowed enough in the last couple years that I reach for synthetic almost every time now. Old habits die hard though and my dad still buys felt for every job. Different generation, different instincts, and we've had this argument more than once at family dinners.
Flashing
Flashing is the unsung hero of roofing and it's ugly metal that nobody sees but it's the only thing standing between your plywood and a rainstorm at every joint and penetration and seam on the entire roof surface. Nobody writes songs about flashing but it saves more roofs than any shingle ever will.
Step flashing goes at roof-to-wall intersections and you count the shingle courses along each wall (every 5 inches vertically) so a 20 ft wall with 6-inch exposure needs about 40 pieces. Drip edge runs the entire perimeter and valley flashing runs the length of each valley times 2 for both sides. If your roof has more than two valleys the flashing cost starts adding up faster than you'd expect and I've seen that line item surprise more than one homeowner.
For a 40 by 30 gable roof with two valleys at 15 ft each the drip edge comes to 40 plus 40 plus 30 plus 30 equaling 140 linear ft while valley flashing hits 15 times 2 equaling 30 linear ft. Step flashing needs about 36 pieces for 30 ft of wall and that's three different measurements for three different products and all of them are equally important, no exceptions.
The Dollar Amount
Summing everything for 1,344 sq ft with architectural shingles, 30 lb felt, and standard flashing and assuming you're not buying the absolute cheapest option on the shelf like some kind of maniac:

Online Calculators and Why They Lie
Most roofing calculators ask for length, width, pitch, roof type, and overhang width and they auto-calculate squares and shingles and sometimes cost. Convenient for sure and I use them myself as a starting point, no shame in that.
But check the waste factor manually because a lot of them default to 10% which works for a simple gable but falls apart completely on anything with hips and valleys and dormers and basically any roof that looks interesting from the street. Bump it to 15% manually or find a calculator that lets you adjust the waste percentage directly and if it doesn't let you adjust it, find a different calculator. Plenty of options out there anyway.
Also most calculators don't include starter strips or ridge caps in their shingle count and starter strips run along the eaves needing about 1 bundle per 40 linear ft while ridge caps cover the peak at about 35 linear ft per bundle. Both are easy to forget and deeply annoying to go back for mid-project when you're tired and covered in asphalt granules and just want to be done.
Flat roofs use the same underlayment math but completely different surface materials (rolled roofing or modified bitumen, never shingles) and mixing up "square feet" with "roofing squares" is probably the single most expensive math mistake in all of home improvement. A square is 100 sq ft. Not 1 sq ft. Two extra zeros make a very expensive difference and I've seen it happen to smart people, seriously.
The biggest rookie move I see repeatedly is people measuring their house footprint and ordering based on that number without accounting for pitch at all and on a 12/12 roof that gives you 41% less material than you actually need. That's not a miscalculation at that point and it's a full-blown disaster with a ladder and a credit card and a very unhappy spouse wondering why the roof is only half done.
Measure twice if not three times and write it down and take your sketch to a supply yard where someone who does this every day can look at it with fresh eyes. That ten minute conversation has saved me more money than any app or calculator or YouTube tutorial ever will and I'd bet actual cash it'll save you money too. Worst case scenario you waste ten minutes and best case you save hundreds of dollars and that's a trade I'll take every single time. No brainer.
